This drawing is titled “Thirty Three” in honor of the 33 elephants a day that are killed in Tanzania. While I was in Tanzania in November of 2012 I learned of the devastating statistic that an average of 33 elephants are poached a day for their ivory. The knowledge of this fact has moved me to create this drawing and in turn a conservation project to help raise money and awareness for the African Elephant.
While I was in Africa I met the founder and CEO of African Wildlife Trust, Pratik Patel who I found spends his own money and a great deal of time in efforts to help the African Elephant. I was very moved by his efforts and passion for the elephants in Tanzania and after seeing these beautiful animals in the wild I wanted to help as well. This drawing is hopefully my first effort in helping these magnificent creatures.
The reference for this drawing came from the next morning's game drive after Pratik informed me of the Elephant crisis. Tuesday November 6, 2012 I saw an enormous amount of elephants and at one point in the morning we sat back and just watched a family of elephants walk across in front of us and pass in front of a Baobab tree, another beautiful sight in Africa.
