An opportunity not to be missed, to trek for Gorillas in Volcano National Park, Rwanda! This is one of Robert’s goals as a wildlife artist is to witness these magnificent animals in the wild.
Rwanda is known as Le Pays des Mille Collines (Land of a Thousand Hills) thanks to the endless mountains in this scenically stunning little country. Nowhere are the mountains more majestic than the Virunga volcanoes in the northwest, and hidden among the bamboo forests are some of the world's last remaining mountain gorillas.
Gorilla Trekking in Rwanda is often described as “life changing” and with good reason. With only an estimated 880 gorillas left in the wild, to see these gentle creatures in their natural habitat is a very special and unique experience.
There are ten families living in the Volcanoes National Park that are fully habituated and available for visits. Each family consists of at least one Silverback (but sometimes as many and four), along with several females and a group of youngsters. Gorillas make their homes in and amongst the bamboo-covered slopes of the Virunga Mountains in the Volcanoes National Park in northern Rwanda. You will trek anywhere from 30 minutes to 2 hours or so, depending on where they made their nest the night before.

Gorilla Trekking – What to Expect:
To protect gorillas from viruses and disease, no children under 15 or adults with illnesses are allowed to trek. Gorilla trekking is one of the most incredible wildlife experiences one will ever encounter. One must be in good physical health/condition to trek gorillas. In order to prepare you for your trek we suggest you are able to walk 1-2 miles up and down hills easily. Gorilla trekking is usually at an altitude of 7,500 feet. Trekking can take anywhere from 1 hour to 3 hours or so. The terrain can be uneven, up and down hills, muddy, wet and very slippery. There is an option to hire a stretcher for an additional cost and be carried to see the gorillas! The cost is approximately $200 for this service.
We also suggest having travel insurance/air ambulance service as well. Water is provided at all times during your trek. There are porters available to carry your camera and other equipment. Your day will begin around 7:30 am. Once your gorilla group is found you will have 1 hour with the gorillas. This is a very special experience you will never forget.
