The painting was a for a themed exhibit titled Fahrenheit 451 and a personal challenge to paint the human form instead of just an animal or bird. The inspiration for this painting and title comes from the quote, "I hate a Roman named status quo." Meaning "Avoid the Ordinary."  The young woman is of course is Clarisse McClellan from the story, a beautiful 17 year old who is gentle and innocent but full of curiosity. The Fire department is not what we know of it today but the opposite, the burner of books and knowledge, she of course is enjoying a book next to that which says it is forbidden.

“Stuff your eyes with wonder. Live as if you'd drop dead in ten seconds. See the world. It's more fantastic than any dream made or paid for in factories. Ask no guarantees, ask for no security, there never was such an animal. And if there were, it would be related to the great sloth which hangs upside down in a tree all day every day, sleeping its life away. To hell with that . Shake the tree and knock the great sloth down on his ass.”
Fahrenheit 451
~Ray Bradbury
