Robert traveled the James River with Richmond Audubon Society members and biologists from the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries and the VCU Rice Center who were studying the nocturnal migration patterns of the Northern Saw-whet Owl. Each autumn researchers and volunteers from Canada south to Virginia in the east and Colorado in the west, band and release several thousand of these tiny raptors. In 2007-08, Virginia banding stations, including the one at the VCU Rice Center, established for the first time that central Virginia is a significant wintering area for this species.
